While making this piece, I have been thinking about Valerie Van Mulukom's research talking about social networks being strongly linked to our wellbeing. She is pointing out that rituals, such as frequent group gatherings, are particularly good at facilitating such networks. The tablecloth often plays a central role in group gatherings. Showing it in a state of vulnerability, stained, crumbled and torn, but still held together by the grid created by threads, is a physical metaphor of the importance of the networks we have, created collectively by ritualistic behaviors.

Making an East European tablecloth by sewing single layers of paper napkins together with drawings incorporating Polish folk patterns, is a light attempt of preserving the tradition of making as a counterpart of industrialization, one of the factors exacerbating loss of tradition.

I was looking to create the feeling of fragmentation and lack of clarity through this incomplete form, encouraging the viewer to reflect on whether something is of more value as a complete piece or whether a scrap can have value in itself and what is the difference between the two.
