I arranged this still life as a colour study and to relate to my previous painting, Tiptoe the Cat. As well as the colour, shapes and marks, I needed a name so the painting would come together and feel complete. To choose a title, I decided to read about some of the objects. At first, I thought the Pig was going to the be key figure but eventually I realised I had been channelling Guan Yin. ‘The name Guan Yin is a short form for Kuan-shi Yin, meaning "Observing the Sounds (or Cries) of the (human) World". The painting is framed in a limed white frame St Ives Style.

Tiptoe the Cat

This painting started with the colour yellow. To create the composition, I chose pages from wallpaper books. The fabric was introduced, moved, considered. Once the background colours felt exciting, I added the objects. I still had flowers in the garden! As I composed, I thought about Mary Fedden and Elizabeth Blackadder. Sometimes I don’t have a specific idea when I start a painting, but I always seek harmony as I paint. The cat, which I’d bought at a charity shop, had oodles of character and created a dark I needed. As I painted around and around I felt I was tuning an instrument and had to admit that ‘tiptoe’ stole the show. The painting is framed in a limed white frame St Ives Style.

No Shortage of Nightshades

Where I live nightshades are rationed now. You can get some nightshades without any problem… chilies seem to be available as do aubergines, (or eggplant) but tomatoes and peppers are being rationed. I love tomatoes and salad. I eat them every day, 365 days a year. Unfortunately, in the UK, there is also a limit to how much salad you can buy this month. Luckily, I have a polytunnel and grow lettuce and greens all year round, but tomatoes can’t get enough heat or light during a winter in the UK. This painting is my tribute to my essentials. And if you’re curious, the green fabric at the back is an apron I embroidered in Kenya, in the Peace Corps. It’s all the food we ate and could get at the market with a motto: Eat Drink and be Merry (in Kiswahili).
